Rare diseases

Liver disease encompass a variety of rare conditions including haemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, Budd Chiari syndrome, cystic liver diseases, Gilbert's Syndrome, each with a prevalence lower than 5 in 10,000. Collectively, however, rare diseases account for a significant proportion of patients with liver disease.

In 2009, the EU adopted a comprehensive strategy on rare diseases with the Council Recommendation on rare diseases. EASL contributed to the shaping of this EU strategy thanks to its response to the EU's public consultation on rare diseases.
