Organ Donation and Transplantation

Liver transplantation is one of the most common organ donation procedures and is the only available solution for end-stage liver disease patients - thus making the difference between life and death for thousands of people.

The EU is trying to address the challenges linked to organ donation and transplantation thanks to an Action Plan (2009-2015) and with the future adoption of the proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on standards of quality and safety of human organs intended for transplantation. EASL has contributed to the debate by meeting with Commission officials on this topic and explaining the particularities of liver transplantation.
