Following the recent Swiss referendum on free movement the EU Commission has suspended negotiations with Switzerland on a range of issues, including research collaboration. Prior to the referendum Switzerland had been expected to sign an agreement to take part in the Horizon 2020 programme as an associated country, which would have given Swiss researchers and Swiss based institutes the same rights to participation as their EU counterparts. Until negotiations re-commence and a new agreement is signed, Switzerland will take part in Horizon 2020 as a third country. This will have funding consequences for Swiss partners in all EU Horizon 2020 projects.
