Dear colleagues - participants in 10th Symposium on Portal Hypertension,
it is my great pleasure and honour to invite you to Banska Stiavnica, the place where the Siavnica symposium - now known as SPH - was born in 2007.
The first SPH was convened as a response to the impossibility of observing Baveno IV recommendations emerging after the withdrawal of non-selective beta blockers from the slovak market. This ad-hoc meeting with the aim to allocate carvedilol expert opinion-level recommendation in the prevention of variceal rebleeding, turned out to be a lacking format: the focus on topics rarely addressed in-depth in our region and the atmosphere conductive for ideas and networking have proven to be fertile ground for SPH here to stay. In fact, SPH has soon become one of the core meetings of Slovak society of hepatology.
Another gradually emanating feature characteristic of SPH has been the bilaterally beneficial blending of energies of the most experienced and youngest generations of hepatologists.
The anniversary 10th SPH was honoured by EASL endorsement and participation of the most prominent speakers from the field of advanced chronic liver disease; therefore, we hope it will be a landmark occasion with the opportunity to look back, to look ahead, and - most importantly - to look inside and to look deeper.
