The program will address five key topics in current hepatology in the form of state-of-the-art presentations given by leading experts from Europe and the Americas. We will review emerging issues in the following areas:

  1. nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, which begins to dominate the field as we await answers to fundamental questions in its diagnosis, management, and outcomes;
  2. chronic hepatitis C, which is now easy to cure due to revolutionary pharmaceutical advances yet global eradication faces major challenges;
  3. complications of liver disease, which will be a smorgasbord of expert opinions on how to manage adverse outcomes and to provide comfort and dignity for the patient with cirrhosis;
  4. hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a globally prevalent and dismal outcome of chronic liver disease with slowly mounting hope for better survival through personalized treatment; and
  5. frontiers in hepatology, reviewing some of the most exciting advances such as the role of gut microbiota, the power of big data, and the promise of engineered hepatocytes.

A poster session will join each of the major sessions in which you may display your research and discuss the findings with your colleagues and leaders in the field. This meeting is intended to be the forerunner in a series of future conferences that will hopefully bring back the spirit of Basel Liver Week, a highly coveted series of liver meetings that assembled the best and foremost in liver research and clinical practice.
