EASL, the European Association for the Study of the Liver, founded in 1966, is a medical association dedicated to pursuing excellence in liver research, to the clinical practice of liver disorders, and to providing education to all those interested in hepatology. As of 2023, EASL serves 5,300 members from 112 countries.

EASL engages globally with all stakeholders in the field of hepatology, worldwide. Our aim is to spread knowledge and expertise in best practices and the latest scientific breakthroughs in this field. We advocate for the benefit of patients and advise European and national health authorities. EASL runs topical conferences, schools, and related educational meetings. Our journals, the Journal of Hepatology and JHEP Reports, provide an international forum for the publication of original articles, reviews, and letters to the Editor, describing the latest science in hepatology. Our eLearning hub, EASL Campus, offers more than 6,200 resources on hepatology and liver research.

Our mission

The European Association for the Study of the Liver mission is to be the Home of Hepatology so that all who are involved with treating liver disease can realise their full potential to cure and prevent it. The purpose of the association is to promote communication between European professionals interested in the liver and its disorders. In particular, the association shall:

  1. Promote research concerning the liver
  2. Promote education of physicians, scientists and public awareness of liver diseases and their management
  3. Act as an advisor to European and national health authorities concerning liver diseases, provision of clinical services and the need for research funding
  4. Foster European multicentre controlled trials
  5. Facilitate scientific exchange
  6. Facilitate participation of Young Investigators at its meetings

To be the prime resource for liver-related education and professional development of Health Care Professionals at all layers in the health care system as well as patients.

We aim to advocate for the highest standards of care for patients with liver conditions.

Our constitution

EASL is a non-profit organisation with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. It performs its duty under a written constitution. The association is managed by the EASL Governing Board made up of 15 elected members, all active in the medical field.

EASL is composed of individual members who renew their membership on a yearly basis. EASL members meet once a year at the General Assembly held during EASL Congress.

Code of Conduct of healthcare professionals and scientific organisations

The European Association for the Study of the Liver strives to uphold the highest ethical standards in its mission and through its work and is dedicated to operating in a transparent manner.

As a member of the Biomedical Alliance in Europe, we have jointly approved, with other members of the alliance, the Code of Conduct of healthcare professionals and scientific organisations. This code sets out core principles for health care professional and scientific organisations to maintain and enhance professional independence, objectivity, and scientific integrity.

Our equality, diversity, and inclusion policy statement

EASL’s goal is to pursue and facilitate excellence in liver research, clinical practice of liver disorders, and the provision of hepatology education to all those interested in hepatology, regardless of gender, ethnicity, nationality, disability, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, or age.

This policy statement is designed to encourage diversity and support equal opportunities in all of EASL’s internal and external activities.
