EASL attends the EUROCARE European Alcohol Policy Conference

On June 21 - 22, EASL attended the 4th European Alcohol Policy Conference, entitled "From capacity to action". The conference organized bi-annually by EUROCARE (European Alcohol Policy Alliance), is co-financed by the European Commission, and co-sponsored by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

This 4th conference aimed to stimulate action in alcohol policy by gathering national and EU experts and policymakers in all fields of alcohol policy, including health, marketing, trade, road safety and others, to analyse ‘why Europe has not come to grips with alcohol’.

Speakers included high-level experts and representatives from the WHO, the European Commission, and national ministries. Topics for discussion included alcohol as a global health concern, alcohol marketing, alcohol and health inequalities, alcohol at the workplace, and the societal cost of alcohol.

Several speakers referred to liver disease, showing overall good awareness among alcohol stakeholders of the negative effects of alcohol on the liver. In particular, the European Commission representatives called for a special focus on youth and health inequalities in the field of alcohol.

EASL’s attendance allowed us to increase our visibility in the European scene, exchange views with other alcohol stakeholders, and explore potential partnerships.

The presentations of the speakers are available on the EUROCARE website.
