On 4 May, the European Parliament Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) held an exchange of views with the Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dalli, on the Commission’s 2010 Work Programme. Regarding investing on research and alcohol, Commissioner Dalli agreed with MEP Nessa Childers (S&D, IE) that research should be conducted on important health determinants, such as alcohol, and he will make an effort to steer health research in that direction. He flagged however that resource constraints exist in these areas. He also added that more financial resources are needed for prevention and preventive campaigns in order to make health sustainable and reduce health inequalities. EASL is currently liaising with European Parliamentarians to follow-up on the Commission’s comments.
