Tania Roskams studied Medicine at Leuven University and graduated in 1989. Following this, she completed a combined clinical and research fellowship at the Department of Pathology of the University Hospitals Leuven, where she received her PhD degree in Medical Science in 1995. She performed a fellowship in the USA Dec 1993 - Dec 1994 for additional training in liver transplant pathology with Prof. David Van Thiel (Oklahoma Baptist Medical Center, Oklahoma) and Prof. Jake Demetris. Tania Roskams has been Professor in Anatomy and Histology and Professor in Pathology at the Leuven University School of Biomedical Sciences and Medicine since 1996. She has also been Chairman of the Department of Morphology and Molecular Pathology since 2008.
Professor Roskams has published more than 350 International scientific papers in highly ranked journals. She has given more than 200 invited lectures in the area of her expertise on numerous occasions to international audiences. She serves as a Scientific Board Member for the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF), and as a Governing Board Member for the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL). She is a founding member of the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA). Professor Roskams is a Board Member of the Belgian Association of Pathologic Anatomy (BVPA). She is also serving as Editorial Board Member for international journals, such as J Hepatology, Liver International, Hepatology International, Virchows Archives, Comparative Hepatology,…. She is serving as a journal referee for numerous peer-review journals.
Professor Roskams is a member of the International Liver Study Group (The Gnomes) and of the Laennec Society. She is also a member of the International Concensus group on liver nodules. Her research interest is mechanisms of activation and differentiation of human liver progenitor cells and their role in cancer. She is also specialized in phenotyping animal models and comparing models with human diseases (translational research).
